Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents as a child due to her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to give her an opportunity to study literature or theater. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who had a social conscience and instilled DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Even though DuVernay lived within Compton with her family she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to direct a movie about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. In the year 1990 she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood, California. As in school, DuVernay became interested in producing for television journalism. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the trash from one of the juries. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to move towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist immediately after graduation. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR her agency also launched several lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful. Her fame is due to her role in American Experience, (1987) A More Perfect Union and A More Perfect Union (2009).
